Cornflowers- 3 colour options
Inspired by the wild beauty of cornflowers growing in tangled hedgerows and bushes I came across on my summer travels around Britain, this little print celebrates the delicate purple sparks of colour that caught my eye. I was drawn to their natural charm and the way their flowers emerge amongst the surrounding greenery, inspiring me to create a pattern that captures something of their untamed beauty.
Created using a traditional four-layer reduction lino printing process, the design was printed by hand in soft, harmonious shades of purple and green. As with all my designs, the process begins with a print, but this small series has taken on a life of its own. I am a lover of keeping the ridges and smudges from the carving process and see these marks as a sign of my handmade process.
I printed a series of just eight, experimenting with three different Japanese papers in off-white, pale green and cream. Each paper brings its own character to the finished print, with subtle differences in colour, texture and impression. Although they share the same design, every print has become an original in its own right.
The prints are individually hand-printed using Caligo Safe Wash relief ink on delicate Japanese papers, with their natural deckle edges left untouched. The gently textured fibres and organic edges enhance the tactile quality of each piece, lending a quiet simplicity to this small botanical artwork.
Each print is hand-printed, signed and numbered, making it a little original for lovers of botanical art and traditional, slow printmaking.
